What’s the Purpose of a Mouth Guard?

We may recommend a mouth guard for a variety of reasons:

  • Prevent teeth grinding or clenching at night
  • Alleviate TMJ symptoms
  • Improve the outcome of an orthodontic treatment for athletes
  • Protect teeth from chips, cracks, and fractures during impact sports like football, wrestling, or horseback riding

Do you or your child play sports?

According to the ADA, athletes are 60 times more likely to damage their teeth if they don’t wear a mouth guard! An estimated 200,000 high school and college-age athletes in the US avoid mouth injuries each year by wearing mouth guards. If someone in your family plays sports, talk to us about a custom mouth guard.

Tip: Chewing on your mouth guard like Steph Curry is a bad idea. It won’t help you hit half-court jumpers and will actually damage the mouth guard, making it less effective at protecting your teeth.

Not All Mouth Guards Are Created Equal

Drug and sporting goods stores sell a variety of pre-made or “semi-custom” dental mouth guards.

We recommend avoiding these off-the-shelf mouth guards as they have several dangerous drawbacks:

  • Not customized to your mouth and will never fit correctly
  • Not as durable or long lasting
  • May cause difficulty speaking or even breathing
  • Uncomfortable and often fail to cover all your teeth
  • Mouth guards made of soft moldable plastic actually encourage jaw clenching

Note that the ADA does not consider a stock mouth guard an acceptable facial protective device. If you want to protect your smile, please talk to us about a custom-made solution.

Questions?

Answers to Your Questions

What does a dental mouth guard do?

A mouth guard covers your teeth and protects your teeth, tongue, gums, and cheeks from trauma caused by teeth grinding or sports injuries.

Does my insurance cover dental guards?

Most dental insurance plans cover preventive care like your routine cleanings, exams, and x-rays. However, not all plans cover larger treatments like custom crowns, sealants, or mouth guards. At Hildreth Dental, we offer an in-house membership program that allows you to save $150+ on routine care plus 15% off other dental procedures, including mouth guards.

What else should I do to protect my teeth from damage?

Professional dental cleanings keep bacteria-filled tartar from building up and hurting your gums or causing decay. Good at-home dental hygiene habits are also key to protecting against cavities, gum disease, and other problems. You may also benefit from a dental sealant treatment, which acts as a shield and blocks out germs, and keeps bacteria from damaging your enamel.
